Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance
These photographs were commissioned by the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance for an exhibit entitled Changing Tides: The Evolving Landscape of the East River. The show focused on the industrial, ecological and transportation history that has made this river a wellspring of growth and prosperity in New York. Currently the East River waterfront is undergoing a dramatic transformation, as industrial infrastructure gives way to residential and recreational development. These photographs reveal a few of the essential facilities that currently line the river: power plants, water transfer stations, and sewage treatment centers, and a few abandoned structures that speak of a grittier past
